What is the definition of Alimony Modification?
An alimony modification is a court order that raises, lowers, or ends spousal support after the divorce is final. Florida requires a substantial change in circumstances that was not anticipated when the original award was set.
What Qualifies
- Retirement, under the 2023 alimony reform signed into law
- A real, involuntary drop in the paying spouse’s income
- The receiving spouse’s remarriage or supportive relationship
- A recipient who no longer needs the support to maintain the standard set at divorce
How the Process Works
The moving spouse files a supplemental petition and proves the change at a hearing. Bridge-the-gap alimony and non-modifiable alimony cannot be changed. Durational and support modification claims face strict time limits, so acting quickly matters.
